Over the past few days I’ve been trying to get some structure (for the Xth time, I know) and because of my serious inferiority complex when it comes to vocabulary I’ve been focusing quite a lot on that.
I feel that working with word lists is very satisfactory! When I use a software, I can’t really see how many words I’ve got there, whereas with my lists, I can just flip through them and get a very easy overview. I study the words in groups of 7 and it is working very well for Icelandic at least! I’m still struggling with the words from Два слова о японском, and I’ve learnt at least 20 of them really well with just writing them in alternating columns; Russian – Swedish – Russian – Swedish… (while pronouncing them in Russian as I write them in both Russian and Swedish) and the same for perhaps 200 Icelandic words. What really gets to me though, is (as usual), the Russian verbs, so to try and get them into my head I’ve started using the Scriptorium technique on the whole text. I did half last night, and today at work (since I didn’t bring the right notebook) I started on Chechov’s Мальчики.
Something that I realized helped a LOT though, is recording. I’ve written another essay that I had to record instead of handing it in on «paper», and in the process of trying to record every sentence without 100 pronunciation mistakes I think the words kind of got stuck. You really have to LOOK at them, think about the sounds and the harmony of the sounds, and so on. And unless you’re a genious you’ll have to record over and over again until you are satisfied. It’s good to record in chunks though, not single words. In a chunk of 3 sentences you are bound to screw up several words at least once, and then you have to start over again
I’m thinking I will try to organize my papers better, not do scriptorium on random papers that I then throw away, but save them all so that I see how much I have done. For this purpose, I have made sheets in Word that will maximise the use of the pages while keeping the lines very discrete. I will probably add some photos of how I organize my word lists and scriptorium pages later!
